2 Stone Mill Elementary Students Rewarded for Saving Peer

Two Stone Mill Elementary School students were recognized for saving a fellow student who fell from a second story banister.

Matina Naum and Alex Rossoshek, fifth grade students at Stone Mill, are members of the school’s patrol duty system. The two were dismissing students at the end of the school day on Feb. 14, with one student patrolling the top of a staircase and the other at the bottom. Stone Mill is a two-floor building.

Matina and Alex then both saw another fifth grade student, whose name was not revealed, sliding down the banister with his legs on the outside, according to Principal Kim Williams. The student fell from the banister, crashing into the concrete.

“He was down and out,” Williams said, describing the injured student.

Immediately getting help from adults who were nearby, Matina and Alex stayed calm despite the fact that they’ve only been patrol members for a year, according to Williams. Additionally, the students helped clear the area of other students.

To reward their actions, the American Automobile Association awarded the two students for their actions. AAA manages the nation’s safety patroll program.

Both students are set to leave Stone Mill next year, as the school runs from kindergarten to fifth grade.

“[Matina and Alex] are lovely little girls who have been here since kindergarten,” Williams said.
