5 Things to Know Today, June 16, In Montgomery County

Today is Friday, June 16 and it’s the last day of school for MCPS students. Here are 5 things to know and the 10 day weather forecast as we head into the weekend.

1. County Juneteenth Celebration: County Executive Marc Elrich will present six community members with the African American Living Legend Award tonight at 7 p.m. at the Black Rock Center for the Arts in Germantown. Saturday, the County’s Junteenth celebration continues at Black Rock with dance performances, art exhibits, film screenings, book talks and more.

2. Friday Night Concerts: The 19th Street Band performs in Downtown Bethesda tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the corner of Norfolk and Del Ray Avenues. Norfolk Avenue is closed to cars from Del Ray to St. Elmo Avenue. Also, the Rockville Town Square outdoor concert series kicks off at 6 p.m. with the pop rock band Liquid A.

3. Juneteenth Holiday Weekend: Concerts, art exhibits, scavenger hunts, historical presentations, film screenings and more are planned in celebration of Juneteenth. Check out this list of 11 events. The Scotland community is hosting a three-day festival titled “2023 Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival“. Scotland was one of the first communities of free slaves in Montgomery County. The festival kicks off Saturday evening with a concert at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Club. The proceeds from the festival will be used to repair and expand the historic Scotland AME Zion Church which sustained water damage in 2020 and is not safe.

4. Rockville Town Center Road Closure: Saturday’s Suds and Soles 5K race will bring road closures to Downtown Rockville.

5. Summer Reading Challenge:  The Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) Summer Reading Challenge starts Saturday with a kickoff party at Rockville Memorial Library from 10:30 a.m. – noon . This year’s theme is “All Together Now.” The challenge ends Aug. 31.

 And One More Thing: MCPS students can visit KID Museum for free on Sundays this summer. Pre-registration is recommended.
