1. Council Approves Budget: On Thursday, the county council approved a $7.1 billion operating budget, including $3.3 billion for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), funding 99.2% of the county school board’s request. The vote came as councilmembers just found out the school system is considering laying off 143 teachers and rescinding 177 contracts from future teachers in order to make the budget work. 3. County Outdoor Pools Open: The county’s seven outdoor pools open at noon Saturday, May 25, and will operate on weekends through June 14. New this year, children under 12 years old must be accompanied and cared for by a person 16 years old or older.

4. Ride On Food Drive: The county’s 31st Annual “Give and Ride Food Drive,” benefiting Manna Food, runs from Sunday, May 26, to Saturday, June 1. The drive, organized by the county’s transportation department, requests donations of non-perishable food items on any county Ride On bus or at designated drop-off sites. Bus riders who donate will have their fare waived.

5. What’s Open, What’s Closed: Monday is a county holiday with many facilities and programs closed. Check the schedule here.
