5 Things to Know Today, Nov. 24, In Montgomery County

Know Before You Go: Montgomery County government and Montgomery Parks announced multiple closures and operating hour changed for facilities, services, buildings and offices during this Thanksgiving holiday weekend.  Check the cities of Gaithersburg, Rockville, and Takoma Park websites for their schedule changes.

3. Football State Playoffs: Both Blake and Churchill advance to the state semifinals with wins last week. Blake captured its first regional title in school history last week to advance to the 4A/3A semifinals. Friday at 2 p.m. Blake takes on North Point (from Waldorf in Charles County) at home at 2 p.m. Churchill are the 4A regional champs for the first time since 1995 with their win against Bethesda-Chevy Chase. Friday, the Bulldogs host the Broadneck Bruins (from Annapolis) at home at 6:30 p.m.

4. Small Business Saturday: Did you know that for every dollar spent at a local business, 70 cents remain in the community? When one dollar is spent at a national chain only 30 cents stay local. County Executive Marc Elrich wants residents to shop locally, especially on Saturday, Nov. 25.

5. Flags Fly at Half Staff: The U.S. flag and the Maryland flag will be lowered to half-staff Saturday in honor of former first lady Rosalynn Carter, who died Nov. 19. Her funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 29 in the Carter’s hometown of Plains, Georgia. Flags will return to full staff at sunset on the 29th.
