5 things to know today, Oct. 1, in Montgomery County

1. Weather: Today’s forecast is partly sunny then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 82 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. See more here

2. New Law: In Maryland, new laws go into effect today, including a law to stop “super speeders” through technology. MCM spoke with Police Lt. Patrick Kepp and Olney resident Mindy Badin, both who personally know the urgency of making streets safer, when a similar law went into effect in Virginia. Read more here

3. County Council: The council will have a joint committee meeting at 9:30 a.m. to review separate bills about hiring county police officers from a Department of Homeland Security law enforcement agency and eligibility for county employment, and to get a briefing about a June 4 data breach. 4. Virtual Public Hearing on Washington Grove Connector Trail: At 6:30 p.m., the county transportation department will have an online public hearing about the proposed Washington Grove Connector Trail. Registration is required. A Zoom link will be sent out via email to registrants. Register here

5. ICYMI: The Poolesville Day parade kicked off on time on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 20. Every year the event draws 12,000-15,000 visitors to the Upcounty destination. For the last six years the Fair Access Committee has put breakfast on the menu for local politicians as well. MCM drove north to check out the festivities.
