5 Things to Know Today, Sept. 22, In Montgomery County

1. Schools Close Early Friday: Montgomery County Public Schools close early Friday, Sept. 22. A block party for youth hosted by Councilmember Stewart takes place from 2 to 7 p.m. on Veterans Plaza in downtown Silver Spring.

3. Foodie Fridays Speakers Series:  ‘Saving Seeds and Stories’ is the topic for tonight’s talk hosted by the Montgomery Parks Community Gardens program. Founder of Cultivate the City, an urban farming organization based in D.C., Niraj Ray is set to talk about the significance of saving seeds from culturally important and hard-to-find crops. The discussion takes place at the Josiah Henson Museum and Park located at 11410 Old Georgetown Road in North Bethesda from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is required and costs $10. The final Foodie Fridays in the series is scheduled for Oct. 27.

4. Burtonsville Day Canceled:  The 32nd annual Burtonsville Day Parade and Festival takes place Saturday, featuring live music, food trucks and activities for children under its “Discovering East County” theme. The parade starts at 10 a.m. and departs from Paint Branch High School. The festival takes place at the Marilyn J. Praisner Library and Community Recreation Center from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Both the parade and festival are free to attend and occur rain or shine.

5. Poolesville Day: The Town of Poolesville invites the public to enjoy a day in the charming township of approximately 6,000 residents. Festival highlights include the 5K charity run/walk, parade, arts and craft, food, live music, and amusement rides. There is also the largest electric vehicle car show on the East Coast and a classic car show. The festival takes place on Whalen Commons located at 19701 Fisher Avenue. And one more thing:  The county’s 10th annual Friendship Picnic takes place Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Wheaton Regional Park, located at 2000 Shorefield Road in Wheaton. The picnic aims to bring people of diverse cultures and faiths together and hopes to foster friendships. Activities include music, dancing, moon bounce, face painting, carousel and train rides.
