On February 17, 2023, Hatcherson-Ross, wearing a balaclava face concealing mask, boarded a Metrobus in Silver Spring. Once on the bus he shot Elliott who in turn produced his own gun and fired back. At that point Hatcherson-Ross pointed his weapon at a second victim. When his gun malfunctioned, he racked it and fired a second shot at the second victim. Hatcherson-Ross got off the bus moving past other passengers. Justice Elliott was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hatcherson-Ross was also found guilty of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of use of a firearm in commission of a violent crime, and reckless endangerment for firing his gun on an occupied Metrobus.

Hatcherson-Ross faces the potential of two life sentences with an additional 45 years in prison. He will be sentenced on August 20.

State’s Attorney John McCarthy commented on the case: “This level of brazen and senseless violence on public transportation cannot be tolerated. We are thankful that justice has prevailed, and the defendant will be held fully accountable.”
