Maryland Ranked First in Fast-Food Nation

Nevada may spend more money on fast-food, and Hawaii, per capita, has the most fast-food restaurants. But to find the heart of American fast-food, just look in your backyard. According to an article from the Escoffier School of the Culinary Arts, Maryland is the “fast food capital of America.”

Escoffier said nationally, an average of 35.70% of all restaurants are fast-food, in comparison to Maryland’s 46.76% – the highest percentage in the country. Not far behind in rankings is neighboring Virginia, in fifth place, with nearly 40%.

But why does Maryland love fast-food so much?

Home to award-winning establishments like Little Miner Taco and birthplace of chains like Moby Dick House of Kabob, it’s no wonder why fast-food is such a piece of the Old-Line State’s culinary culture.

For one, the demand for quick bites and savory burgers seems to be on a roll in Maryland, with many popular chains introducing locations across the state. After closing its doors in Maryland in 2023 due to allegations of fraud, Bojangles recently made its return, opening a franchise in Frederick. Likewise, Zaxby’s plans on bringing their signature southern chicken to Maryland later this year. And even Canadian restaurant chain Tim Hortons has plans to open 10 locations across the state.

Additionally, the state has begun to incorporate fast-food into its SNAP program. Maryland is one of nine states in the country with a Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) – currently in the pilot stage – which is geared toward select SNAP users who may experience greater challenges in preparing their own meals.

Through the RMP, participants can use SNAP benefits to buy restaurant-prepared meals at designated establishments, the majority of which being locations of fast-food chains Burger King and KFC.

With government programs increasing fast-food’s relevance and a wide range of dining options statewide, it’s no question Maryland ranks first in the fast-food nation.
