County Looks To Foster Immigrant Mental Health

A trio of minority health initiatives in the County would like members of their communities to tell their stories.

Under the project title Journeys Within 2025: Stories of Resilience and Mental Health, the groups hope to raise awareness of mental health challenges that immigrants in the county experience.

The African American Health Program (AAHP), the Asian American Health Institute (AAHI), and the Latino Health Institute (LHI) are partnering in this initiative.

Residents from these communities can share their immigration journeys by completing a form on the Microsoft Forms platform. The platform accommodates multiple languages via a drop-down menu.  The site will gather stories through Thursday, July 31.

County Executive Marc Elrich voiced his support of the program: “We often talk about mental health in general terms, but we need to recognize that people’s experiences are shaped by their cultures, their histories and their journeys, including the challenges they face through immigration.”

Throughout July, AAHP, AAHI, and LHI will sponsor programs to promote mental health in immigrant communities.

  • African American Health Program will host a series of Zooms every Wednesday at 6 p.m. The topics include Minority Mental Health, Nutrition and Mental Health, Mental Health Treatment, Social Support and Chronic Disease and Mental Health.
  • Asian American Health Initiative will hold a workshop on Grief Navigation in Asian Communities in partnership with Caring Matters. Saturday, July 26, 11 a.m., 518 S. Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg.
  • Latino Health Initiative offers free bilingual, non-clinical and culturally appropriate support groups. Called “Encuentros” they partner with Identity to support adolescents and adults. Contact lmarino@identity-youth.org or call 240.364.4099.
