WSSC’s “Big Blue Tappers” Advance to Finals in Pipe Tapping Competition

When not repairing water main breaks and keeping everyone’s water pure, WSSC Water participated in a tapping competition at the Chesapeake Tri-Association Conference.

The pipe tapping competition is a timed race where teams of water operators drill into a pressurized pipe and then install a new water service connection. This is all done while the water is still flowing through the pipe.

These are skills used by WSSC Water employees daily.

The three-day conference, which wraps up today, was held in Ocean City, Md.

WSSC Water’s men’s team—Big Blue Tappers—had the fastest time, defeating DC Water. Big Blue Tappers will now move on to international competition set for June of 2026 in Washington D.C.

The women’s team—Little Blue Tappers—did not have any competition locally, and will automatically move on to compete in the international competition.
