Whitman High School Stages an ‘It’s Academic’ Reunion

Walt Whitman High School was the scene of The Battle of the Ages Thursday as the 1970 “It’s Academic” team challenged the Bethesda school’s current team of students and teachers.

Boomers, Gen X and Gen Z competitors faced off during a fast-paced competition moderated by the television quiz show’s moderator Hillary Howard.

Each of the three teams answered general knowledge questions, as well as ones geared for different ages. In a close competition, the student team, made up of Grey Sherling, Simon Yohannes and Jack Pelmoter, came out on top. Bary Kemelhor, Cliff Goodman and Robin Sproul were members of the Class of 1970 team.

Sproul wasn’t on her class “It’s Academic” team, but Kemelhor asked her to participate. They have known each other for a long time. “We were on student government together at Pyle Junior High,” she said, referring to Thomas Pyle Middle School.

They gathered recently to practice at Kemelhor’s house, using a buzzer system his father had created when Kemelhor and his siblings were on Whitman’s team. “I hoped we would win,” she said.
