Sometimes, the game of soccer can be heartbreaking.
After an incredible run that saw Montgomery Blair High School girls soccer claim the Montgomery County title and advance to the Class 4A Maryland State quarterfinals, the Blazers suffered their first loss of the season to Severn Run in a penalty shootout. After playing to a 3-3 draw through regulation and double overtime, the match went to penalty kicks which Severn Run won 5-4 this past Saturday at Blair High School in Silver Spring.
The loss ended Blair’s amazing season in which it went 14-1-1 and out scored opponents 72-11 and won its fourth straight regional championship, but fell short of the school’s first-ever state title. The highlight of Blair’s season was a dramatic 1-0 overtime win over Sherwood to secure the Montgomery County crown.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase (11-2-2) will now play Severn Run in the state semi-finals Friday, Nov. 7.
