Silver Spring Man Shot in June Dies from Injuries; Death Now Ruled Homicide

A Silver Spring man who was shot in June has died from his injuries, and his death has been ruled a homicide.

Montgomery County Police responded to a call about a shooting on June 19 at 1 p.m. in the 30 block of Hunters Gate Court in Silver Spring. Upon arrival, police officers found Derrick Jones, 40, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. They provided first aid and then transported him to a trauma center for treatment.

At that time, Jones said that his girlfriend’s son, Julian Rogers, 20, of Silver Spring, had shot him, according to police.

Rogers was arrested, and a 9mm privately manufactured firearm with an extended magazine and a live round in the chamber was recovered, according to police.

Jones died Sept. 28 while receiving care at a rehabilitation facility, and an autopsy was conducted Sept. 29.

The Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case to determine whether to pursue a superseding indictment charging Rogers with first-degree murder.
