Making Waves: Ledecky Does It Again

Widely regarded as the greatest female swimmer of all-time, Bethesda native Katie Ledecky is never one to shy away from giving back to the area and community that raised her. Ledecky, a 14-time Olympic medalist, returned to her home state to take part in her inaugural Katie Ledecky Invitational this past weekend at the University of Maryland in College Park.

Over 1,500 swimmers from 30 teams in the Mid-Atlantic region competed in the swim meet, including Ledecky who took to the water to compete in the 1650-meter freestyle event on Sunday. Ledecky took first place and finished in 14:59.62, setting a new American record held previously by Ledecky and she becomes the first woman to finish the distance under 15 minutes.

Ledecky has always been proud of her Montgomery County roots. She attended Stone Ridge in Bethesda and spent her summers swimming at the Palisades Club in Cabin John. Ledecky made her Olympic debut as a 15-year old at the 2012 London Games where she won Gold in the 800-meter freestyle. Now 28 years old, Ledecky has no plans of stopping anytime soon. The 9-time Gold Medalist is aiming to compete again at the 2028 Olympic Summer Games in Los Angeles.
