Woman sentenced to 3 years in fatal Beltway crash

A 20-year-old Lanham woman was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to negligent manslaughter in a June 5, 2024 vehicle crash that called a Rockville man.

Maria Luisa Alvarez also was sentenced Jan. 9 to five years of supervised probation when she is released from prison. A toxicology report showed that her blood alcohol content was .18 grams of alcohol per 100mL of blood.

She pled guilty Nov. 14 in connection with the crash that resulted in the death of Boris Josue Bonilla, 30.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Boris Bonilla. This was a tragic and unnecessary loss, and we thank the Maryland State Police for their thorough investigation in this matter,” said State’s Attorney for Montgomery County John McCarthy.

The crash occurred arpund 3 a.m. on the inner loop of I-495 at Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring.

Alvarez was driving a 2005 Honda Accord on the ramp from southbound Georgia Avenue to the inner loop of the Beltway when she failed to negotiate a right-hand curve on the ramp and ended up in the grassy area between the ramp and the road, according to Montgomery County Police. She continued perpendicular into the travel lanes of the inner loop when her car was struck on the driver side by a Honda Civic.

Alvarez’s car turned counterclockwise and was struck on its passenger side by a Jeep Wrangler. The Jeep tipped and rolled over two times, according to police.

The defendant’s vehicle came to rest in the far-left lane and the left shoulder. The drivers of all three vehicles and two passengers in the Civic were transported to the hospital for injuries. Bonilla was a front seat passenger in the Accord. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
