As temperatures drop, energy use rises, and for many families, the winter months bring costly electric bills.
To help offset the increase, Pepco announced Tuesday it is teaming up with The Salvation Army to expand its Customer Relief Fund.
An additional $1.5 million will be provided to The Salvation Army to administer the funds to customers in need in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and Washington, D.C., according to Pepco.
“This additional funding comes at a critical time during the colder winter months when so many families are facing additional hardships,” said Major Wilma Mason, area commander at The Salvation Army.
Applications opened for Montgomery County Pepco customers Tuesday.
Eligible applicants include limited- and moderate-income customers, as defined by the utility company. They can apply for up to $300 in relief and must have a balance of at least $250 and live in a household that meets income guidelines.
“Since launching the Pepco Customer Relief Fund last year, thousands of District of Columbia and Maryland residents have received assistance, and with this expanded contribution, we’re helping even more customers manage today’s challenges,” said Tyler Anthony, president and CEO of Pepco.
With the additional funding from Pepco’s parent company, Exelon, Pepco’s efforts to assist customer households in need total to $6.5 million in the past year.
