Two committees of the county council put the brakes on data center development here.
On Tuesday, the Economic Development Committee voted unanimously to propose an 18-month moratorium on new data center permits in the county.
In tandem, the Planning, Housing and Parks Committee amended a previous zoning measure aimed at preventing large data centers from being built in the county.
In her Thursday newsletter, Council President Natali Fani-González wrote, “The purpose of these two measures is to allow the necessary time for the Council to deliberate on appropriate guardrails for large data centers in the County and do so in collaboration with the state.”
Councilmember Will Jawando praised the decisions that postpone a large-scale project in Dickerson. He raised concerns about clean energy, watershed protection and increased utility bills for residents.
The final vote on both of these proposals will take place on Tuesday, July 28.
