Six-year-old dead following accidental shooting in Montgomery Village

A six-year-old male child who was involved in a self-inflicted accidental shooting in Montgomery Village has died.

Montgomery County Police and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services went to the 10100 block of Maple Leaf Drive at 2:45 p.m. after receiving a report of an accidental shooting.

The child was unresponsive when the police arrived. He had been shot in the face.

“This child unfortunately gained access to this firearm,” said Sheira Goff, Montgomery County Police Director of Public Information, during a news briefing.

“Right now, there is no foul play suspected regarding the shooting,” she said, adding “It is too early to say if there will be any charges.”

One adult was in the home at the time. Goff would not say if any other children were in the home at the time of the shooting.

First responders delivered CPR to the young boy, but he was pronounced dead at the home.

Police continue to investigate the incident and are working to determine how the child had access to the gun, whether the gun was registered and who owned the weapon.

More information is expected to be released Wednesday.
