A Sunday night street takeover that moved from Prince George’s County into Silver Spring resulted in damage to two Montgomery County police cruisers, authorities said.
Prior to midnight, Montgomery County Police were able to close off most intersections as the takeover was heading into Silver Spring. Still, a street takeover happened at approximately 12:39 a.m. at the intersection of East-West Highway and Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase.
Police said drivers blocked traffic and executed “donuts,” spinning their vehicles in large circles in the roadway. Several people got out of their cars and attempted to prevent officers from entering the intersection, according to police.
During the incident two marked MCPD cruisers were damaged, police said. One officer was inside a police vehicle when the rear window was broken and the windshield smashed.
No officers were injured.
The area was cleared with assistance from the Maryland State Police. Three handguns were confiscated during traffic stops en route to the street takeover.
Police are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the individuals involved. Anyone with information can visit the Crime Solvers of Montgomery County website to submit a tip or call 1-899-411-8477. Tips may be anonymous and may be eligible for rewards from $250 to $10,000.
