School, state officials and students share their love of reading

Excited Burnt Mills Elementary students sporting their Read Across America paper hats welcomed a school bus load of Montgomery County Public Schools staff and state officials to share their mutual love of reading Monday.

Maryland Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller, MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor, Board of Education President Grace Rivera-Oven, Montgomery County Education Association President David Stein and Maryland State Education Association President Paul Lemle all read a book to the students. They then reboarded the school bus and traveled off to the next of 12 schools they planned to visit.

“Reading is the most important thing,” Stein said, noting that it is needed to excel in math, science, history and just about everything else.

Monday’s Read Across America particularly was special for Principal Stacy Ashton, who will be retiring at the end of this school year after 38 years of service. To her, “Reading is fundamental. It is the foundation of all kinds of areas

A group of student ambassadors told the officials why they love their school. “Teachers care about you and want you to succeed,” said Willa Tripani, a fifth grader.
