Pedestrian killed while crossing Beltway in hit and run crash

A pedestrian was pronounced dead Thursday night following a hit-and-run crash on the outer loop of the I-495 Beltway, east of Connecticut Avenue, according to Maryland State Police.

State troopers from the Rockville Barrack of the state police responded to the scene at around 10 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that the motorist parked a work van on the left shoulder of the inner loop and attempted to cross the outer loop travel lanes by foot, according to police. He had a gas can with him when he was struck by oncoming traffic.

The victim’s identity has not been released. He was pronounced dead by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services personnel.

The driver of the car that struck the pedestrian left the scene, according to officials. The victim was struck by a second, who did remain on the scene.

Police are seeking assistance in locating the first driver who fled the scene and the vehicle, described as a silver or gray sedan with heavy front-end damage. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rockville Barrack at 301-424-2101.

State troopers from the College Park Barrack also responded to the scene, in addition to Montgomery County police officers.

Lanes were closed for nearly six hours during the on-site crash investigation, said officials from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.
