Bonuses, retirement incentives offered to eligible MCPS employees ahead of job cuts

Montgomery County Public Schools recently emailed employees eligible for retirement, offering them a one-time financial incentive if they retire by July 1. As MCM previously reported on in its proposed school budget reductions story, retiring employees who submit the necessary paperwork by June 5, will receive a financial bonus of $10,000 for 10-month employees and a $12,000 bonus for 12-month employees.

The offer is being made, according to emails obtained by MCM, because “MCPS is currently facing significant budget challenges, resulting in position reductions for the upcoming Fiscal Year 2027 Operating Budget. These retirement incentives are intended to help reduce the impact of those reductions on employees wherever possible.”

The goal is for MCPS to know what positions are vacant as soon as possible, thereby enabling the district to make job offers to employees whose jobs may be eliminated at end of the current academic year.

The school district is hosting a retirement information session on May 28 and a retirement forms workshop June 3.

The second email message specifically went to employees who had already submitted retirement paperwork that would be effective July 1.

“There are no additional steps or actions that you need to take,” stated the email they received.
