By correctly spelling the word licheny, an eighth-grade student at Robert Frost Middle School advanced to the semifinals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Lauren Merillana is one of 78 spellers who remained in the competition, as of the end of Wednesday morning’s spelling round, out of the original 247 contestants.
The 14-year-old from North Potomac also reached the semifinals during last year’s competition. She ended the competition tied for 20th place.
According to her bio, she is an avid reader and writer. In addition, “She has a deep love for music and aesthetics, and enjoys singing, dancing, and playing the flute and piano,” reads the statement.
The semifinals are scheduled to take place Wednesday at 8 p.m. The finals are set for Thursday at 8 p.m.
