Stick the landing, Montgomery County gymnasts.
The sport will remain as a varsity girls competition in Montgomery County Public Schools for the 2027 season after MCPS officials reversed an earlier decision to end the program.
The move comes following a strong wave of community support, including widespread advocacy efforts and a petition campaign aimed at saving the sport.
It marks a significant victory for athletes, coaches and supporters who rallied to keep the program alive.
During Thursday’s board of education meeting, MCPS Athletic Director Jeffrey Sullivan said the athletics department failed to engage gymnasts, coaches, and families before making its initial decision.
Currently, Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Montgomery Blair, James Hubert Blake, Sherwood, Springbrook, Walter Johnson and Walt Whitman have girls gymnastics teams.
Montgomery County is the last county in the state of Maryland with girls gymnastics as a varsity sport.
