Inside the Pitch: The Making of Red Pitch
September 20, 2025 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USAJoin Olney Theatre’s Artistic Director, Jason Loewith, in conversation with playwright Tyrell Williams for an inside look at Red Pitch—the winner of all five Off-West End Awards for Best New Play.
This engrossing drama follows Bilal, Joey, and Omz—three lifelong friends whose bond has been forged on a small soccer pitch outside their South London apartments. But their world is shifting: professional recruiters are scouting young talent, and dreams of athletic glory hang in the balance. Meanwhile, gentrification is reshaping their neighborhood, with new developments and chain shops pushing out the people and places they’ve always known. At the heart of it all lies a single question: can their friendship survive the loss of their beloved “red pitch” and everything it represents?
After sold-out runs at London’s Bush Theatre and a celebrated West End transfer, Red Pitch arrives in the United States here at Olney Theatre to critical acclaim. Hailed as “fierce, affectionate, and effortlessly funny” (The Guardian) and “a brilliant bit of writing about gentrification, friendship, masculinity, and aspiration” (Time Out London), the play has sparked important conversations on community, ambition, and resilience.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear directly from Tyrell Williams about his creative process and inspiration, and from Jason Loewith about why Red Pitch is a story that speaks powerfully to our current moment and how the story is universal.

Beyond the Stage: Soccer, Stage, and the Stories We Tell
September 27, 2025 3:15 pm - 4:30 pm
Olney Theatre Center, 2001 Olney Sandy Spring Rd, Olney, MD 20832, USAIn Red Pitch, three teenagers fight to hold onto friendship, identity, and their neighborhood—on and off the soccer pitch. Playwright Tyrell Williams uses the rhythms of the game to capture the urgency of gentrification, belonging, and growing up. To deepen the conversation, we welcome scholar Jared Robert Strange, author of After Bend It Like Beckham: Soccer in 21st-Century Theatre and Performance. Strange explores how soccer on stage is more than a backdrop—it’s a powerful language of community, aspiration, and struggle. From The Wolves to Red Pitch, his work shows how theater transforms “the beautiful game” into a way of grappling with issues of race, power, and identity.
Join us as we talk with Jared about why soccer resonates so deeply in performance, and how Red Pitch stands in a growing tradition of plays that turn sport into a stage for the most urgent stories of our time.
