A few light drizzles throughout the evening did not stop the fun for the first of the nine-day Montgomery County Agricultural Fair in Gaithersburg Friday.
Signage throughout the annual fair highlighted America’s 250 anniversary. The fair’s theme this year is “Barn in the USA” to celebrate the anniversary. This year, Montgomery County also celebrates 250 years since its founding.
Plenty of rides, games, farm animals and food was what fairgoers focused on, rather than threats of heavier rain in the forecast.
“We have a ‘Pretty Cow’ contest promoting dairy on Monday evening,” said Mandy German, a member of the board of directors of the Montgomery County Agricultural Center.
In addition, exhibits featuring local agricultural work in Maryland were on display.
“And there’s always pigs and sheep and goats going through the week, so all the 4-H-ers are showing their animals,” German said.
She added that there is a new aerialist show, the Aqua Live Spectacular, on the upper grounds.
“I love that they come every single year,” Susan, a local high school student, said about the fair. “It’s always worth it to me.”

Special Fair Programming
On Monday, the fair will host its first “Sensory-Friendly Midway Morning” for people with autism and sensory sensitivities. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. during the sensory-friendly time block, rides and games will operate without lights or music, and vendors also turn off their lights and music.
