On your left: E-bikes now allowed on county trails

Move over bicyclists, walkers and hikers, there’s a new vehicle to watch out for when on Montgomery County trails.

Montgomery Parks now allows e-bikes and adaptive mountain bikes on designated natural surface pathways. The policy expands recreational access while protecting natural resources and promoting trail safety.

“E-bikes are an increasingly important way for residents to get around, enjoy the outdoors and experience our park system,” said Miti Figueredo, director of Montgomery Parks. “We welcome the responsible use of Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes and adaptive mountain bikes for transportation and recreation. At the same time, we have a responsibility to enforce rules that protect our parks, preserve our trails and keep all users safe.”

Only Class 1 pedal-assist e-bikes are permitted on designated natural surface trails under the new directive. These bikes provide motor assistance only while riders are pedaling and up to 20 miles per hour. Adaptive mountain bikes designed to improve trail access for individuals with disabilities are also allowed.

Motorbikes and mopeds remain prohibited on all park trails because of concerns about trail damage, excessive speed and public safety.

Trail users are reminded to:

  • Ride at safe, controlled speeds
  • Yield to pedestrians and equestrians
  • Stay on designated trails
  • Avoid riding on wet or muddy trails to prevent erosion and trail damage
  • Follow all posted trail rules and closures

Montgomery Parks manages nearly 300 miles of paved and natural surface trails throughout Montgomery County.
