Minimum wage workers in Montgomery County will see an increase in their next paycheck thanks to a local law that requires minimum wage pay keeps up with the pace of inflation.
“When wages keep pace with inflation, working people aren’t forced to fall behind as everyday costs rise. Ensuring fair pay strengthens families, stabilizes our workforce, and supports small businesses that rely on local spending,” said County Executive Marc Elrich in a statement.
Retail workers, food service employees and administrative staffers are the largest group of laborers who will see a bump in their next paycheck. Details on new hourly minimum wage rates, effective July 1, are:
- $18 per hour for large employers with 51 or more employees (up from $17.65)
- $16.50 per hour for mid-size employers with 11-50 employees (up from $16)
- $15.95 per hour for small employers with 10 or fewer employees (up from $15.50)
The increases are based on a 2% rise in the regional Consumer Price Index for the Washington, D.C. region. According to the county, employees working full time could earn approximately $728 more per year at large employers, $936 more at mid-size employers and about $1,040 more at small employers because of the increase.
The federal minimum wage for covered nonexempt employees is $7.25 per hour, according to the US Department of Labor.
