5 things to know today, July 2, in Montgomery County

It’s Thursday, July 2, and here are five things to know in Montgomery County. Check the weather forecast here.

1. Heat Emergency Alert: Montgomery County is under a Heat Emergency Alert through 8 a.m. Monday, July 6. Ride On buses are free and can take people to the county’s cooling centers. See more here

2. July 4 Celebrations Time Change: The county’s July 4 celebrations on Friday and Saturday will start at 7:30 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. due to high temperatures. Fireworks will start around 9:30 p.m.

Friday’s event is at Einstein High School in Kensington and Saturday’s event is at South Germantown Recreational Park. See more here

3. Weekly Briefing: County Executive Marc Elrich will have his weekly virtual media briefing at 12:30 p.m. He will be joined by U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin to talk about the 250th anniversary of the nation. Elrich will also talk about the heat, Independence Day events, recent Supreme Court decisions and a new minimum wage in Montgomery County. Residents can watch on the county’s Facebook page.

4. Rammy Awards’ Employee of the Year: Montgomery County is the proud home of the Employee of the Year award winner. Presented last night at the 44th annual Rammy Awards, Jose Luis Salgado of Zinnia in Silver Spring received the esteemed honor at Arena Stage.
