Montgomery County commuters may need extra patience this summer as major transportation projects affect both road and transit travel across the county.
Beginning July 6 through Sept. 6, Metro’s Red Line will undergo a major construction project that will close the Grosvenor-Strathmore, Medical Center and Bethesda stations. During the shutdown, trains will not operate between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights.
The project includes construction of a new mezzanine at Bethesda station to connect Metrorail with the future Purple Line, as well as maintenance and infrastructure repairs at the affected stations.
To help move riders during the closure, Metro will provide free local and express shuttle buses between North Bethesda and Friendship Heights. Free parking will be available at the North Bethesda and Grosvenor-Strathmore stations.

Drivers along Rockville Pike will also see changes. The Maryland Department of Transportation has installed approximately 7.5 miles of temporary bus-only lanes along portions of MD 355 to prioritize Metro shuttle service. The lanes will be restricted to buses from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday, through Sept. 6.
“The Red Line closure will allow Metro to complete improvement projects, including the construction of a new mezzanine at the Bethesda station to connect Metro Rail with the Purple Line Light Rail,” the Montgomery County Department of Transportation said in a travel advisory.
At the same time, drivers in the Derwood area are dealing with the closure of Redland Road for a bridge replacement project. Redland Road is closed between Briardale Drive and Overhill Road through Aug. 25 while crews replace the aging bridge over Mill Creek and relocate underground utilities.
County transportation officials are encouraging residents to plan ahead, use transit alternatives when possible and expect longer travel times during the summer construction season.
