An officer-involved shooting left one man dead.

On Sunday, July 12, at around 6:47 p.m., Montgomery County officers responded to the 9600 block of Lost Knife Road in Gaithersburg for a weapons complaint.

The complaint alleged an adult man was loading a gun at the bus stop in front of the Montgomery Village Plaza. At the scene, officers worked to clear the crowded parking lot.

According to reports, officers used deescalation techniques in attempts to peacefully resolve the incident.

During their interaction, the man took actions that caused the officers to discharge their service weapons, police say.

Officers provided medical assistance until Fire and Rescue services arrived. The man was ultimately pronounced dead. Reports say a handgun was recovered on the scene.

“We are here tonight because a man has lost his life due to actions of the police department, and we recognize the profound impact this has on the family, the community, and the officers in general,” said Captain Cody Fields, director of media and public information for Montgomery County Department of Police during a press conference at the scene of the shooting.

He said no officers or bystanders were injured during the altercation.

Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. The incident will be investigated by the Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division.

MCM will update the story as information is released.
