A Gaithersburg man was sentenced to 25 years in prison for setting off a pipe bomb at his home, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.
In October 2025, first responders went to the home of Robert Stojinski, Jr., 43, on Empress Court in response to a reported explosion. It was determined that the explosion involved a pipe bomb.
The FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives worked with Montgomery county fire and rescue crews and police to conduct the investigation.
According to charging documents, there was a large hole on the second-floor of Stojinski’s home that extended through to the first-floor ceiling. Police say Stojinski told first responders who asked what happened, “I’d like to plead the Fifth.”
Stojinski suffered shrapnel injuries to his hand and eye and was taken to the shock trauma center of a nearby hospital.
While at the hospital, Stojinski told ATF agents he put fireworks powder inside a metal tube, and said it was something he had worked on for a while, according to investigators.
Investigators found more explosive device components and multiple ghost guns during a search of Stojinski’s home, according to the county state’s attorney’s office.
“In addition to manufacturing explosives and possessing ghost guns, this individual had a history of threatening to do violence. We are thankful that the judge has issued a lengthy prison sentence, during which the defendant will not be able to pose a danger to public safety” said Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy in a written statement.
Stojinski pleaded guilty in April to charges of possession of explosive material with intent to create a destructive device, manufacturing a destructive device and two counts of possessing a ghost gun.
