This year marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States, when 11 Montgomery County residents lost their lives in the tragedy.
The residents were all inside the Pentagon when the strikes hit. Some worked there, two were there for meetings, and two were on the plane that crashed into the building.
Each year in observance of the day, their names are remembered:

- Capt. Lawrence D. Getzfred;
- Michele M. Heidenberger;
- Angela Marie Houtz;
- Teddington Hamm Moy;
- Lt. Darin H. Pontell;
- Scott A. Powell;
- Todd Hayes Reuben;
- Patricia J. Statz; and
- Ernest M. Willcher
Where to honor and remember the 11 Montgomery County lives lost on 9/11
The 9/11 Memorial at Elmwood Park in Rockville is home to 11 benches that line the outdoor space with inscriptions from family members honoring each victim’s character. The park is located at 601 Harrington Road.
The four air strikes on Sept. 11, 2001 killed nearly 3,000 Americans and international citizens, according to a 9/11 FBI investigation. They were the most lethal terrorist attacks in history, according to the FBI.
