The teachers union was presented with a “substantive” wage proposal from the school district Thursday, after the union reportedly found the districts’ offers presented Wednesday to be unacceptable.
“Hundreds of MCEA members showed up at last night’s bargaining session. Our solidarity made a difference, because five months after our initial wage proposal, MCPS made a substantive compensation counterproposal, and walked back its threats of reductions in force and eliminating healthcare benefits,” Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) President David Stein said in a statement emailed to MCM on Friday.
MCEA and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) are in the midst of collective bargaining negotiations.
“While MCPS’s proposal doesn’t go far enough, we can now continue the collective bargaining process, which requires authentic dialogue and an exchange of serious proposals,” Stein stated.
An MCPS spokesperson told MCM in an email, “These are ongoing negotiations and out of respect for the process, we will not comment any further.”
