‘Psammophile’ Spells Victory for 14 Year-Old

Dev Shah, a 14-year old from Largo, Fl, won the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday night. Shah correctly spelled psammophile to win the annual competition.

11 year-old Larry Liao from Rockville was the highest finisher from Montgomery County advancing to the quarterfinals. 14 year-old Charlotte Walsh from Merrifield, Va was runner-up to Shah. Walsh, who is homeschooled, was one of 11 spellers from the DMV.

The competition took place at the Gaylord in National Harbor, Md where the  event has been held since 2011. Participants cannot be older than 14 as of August 31 the year before the competition nor can they be past the eighth grade as of Feb. 1 of that year’s competition.
