A Look Back at 2023: Bethesda’s Felled Linden Oak Gets New Purpose

The County lost one of its oldest landmarks this year. The majestic Linden Oak in Bethesda, reported to be over 300 years-old, was 95 feet tall with a crown spanning 150 feet. In July, Montgomery Parks was forced to cut the white oak down before it became a hazard.

Colin Vale was hired by Montgomery Parks to create a bench from a large branch of the Linden Oak. MCM caught up with Vale in October as he was crafting the branch into a bench.

Vale unveiled the bench in December. It sits at Ken-Gar Palisades Local Park in Kensington.
