Area Drought Watch Lifted After 11 Months

Thanks to all the recent storms and heavy rain, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) lifted the area’s drought watch.

This area has been under a drought watch since July 29, 2024.

Late spring rains and cooler temperatures contributed to improved water supplies, according to the COG.

The last drought watch occurred 15 years ago, in 2010, and lasted only a month.

“As extreme weather conditions become more frequent, water resilience must remain a priority,” said Clark Mercer, COG’s Executive Director. “It’s an ongoing investment in our region’s future growth and development.”

Even though the drought watch was lifted, COG recommends residents use water wisely. Some tips include:

    • Wash full loads of dishes and clothes;
    • Water lawns, plants and shrubs watchfully;
    • Sweep sidewalks and driveways instead of using a hose;
    • Use a commercial car wash that recycles water; and
    • Fix plumbing leaks – especially toilets and faucets.
