August 11-13 Weekend Roundup: 9 Things to Do in Montgomery County

Welcome to our Weekend Roundup of events in Montgomery County. Here are nine things to do this weekend, August 11-13. 

FRIDAY, August 11

Ukulele Teacher Training: James Hill, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer offer a full day of instruction and best practices for ukulele teachers of all levels. The masterclass starts at 9:30 a.m. Friday and takes place at the Strathmore Mansion in North Bethesda. Learn more and register here.

Agricultural Fair:   The 74th Montgomery County Agricultural Fair kicks off today at 3 p.m. at the fairgrounds in Gaithersburg. The fair is open daily through Saturday, Aug. 19.

Plena Fridays:  Plena is a genre of music and dance originating from Puerto Rico around 1900.  Sandy Spring Museum offers monthly instruction in Plena style of music followed by a jam session appropriate for all ages and experience-levels. Instruments are provided. Instruction will be in Spanish and English, but no prior Spanish-language knowledge is necessary. Food and Puerto Rican moonshine will be available for sale. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online. Sandy Spring Museum is located at 17901 Bentley Road in Sandy Spring.

SATURDAY, August 12

Tour Oakley Cabin Museum and Park: From noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, tour the Oakley Cabin located at 3610 Brookeville Road in Olney. Learn the history of the African American community who lived and worked on the site from emancipation into the 20th century. Appropriate for all ages. Free. Chris Urquiaga Concert: Urban Latin singer-songwriter Chris Urquiaga, also known as JChris, performs Saturday at the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center in Silver Spring. This outdoor concert is part of the Bloom at Good Hope Concert Series by Strathmore. The concert starts at 5 p.m. and is free or pay what you can. Bring chairs, blankets and food for a picnic but please no alcohol or pets. RSVP online here.

Brookside Gardens Arts and Crafts Activity:  The Wheaton Arts Parade (WAP) Pyramids Art Exhibition is back at the gardens. WAP artists will lead a nature-inspired art activitiy appropriate for all ages Saturday at 10 a.m.  The activity is free, registration is requested. Brookside Gardens is located 1800 Glenallan Avenue in Wheaton.

SUNDAY, August 13

International Festival: From great food to crafts and music, this festival is fun for the entire family. Admission is free, pets are welcome and the festival takes place rain or shine. Sunday, Aug. 13 from 1 to 7 p.m. at Veterans Plaza in Silver Spring. Cultural performances start at 2 p.m.

Indian Wood Block Printing: Sandy Spring Museum’s children’s arts and craft series known as WondeRoom are workshops for kids and their adults to explore diverse arts. Sunday’s workshop explores the traditionof Indian woodblock printing. Master artist Trisha Gupta guides the group through creating a Rajastani woodblock using motifs from nature. The stamp can be used on fabric or paper. The 2 hour workshop starts Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased online.

Lake Tour by Kayak: Tour Little Seneca Lake by kayak Sunday from 8 to 10 a.m. Basic paddling experience is necessary for this Montgomery Parks activity at the Black Hill Regional Park in Boyds. Fee is $30 and registration is available through ActiveMontgomery.
