Brothers Sentenced to 30 Years Each in Germantown Fatal Shooting

A 17-year-old and 18-year-old have been sentenced for a 2022 fatal Germantown shooting.

Investigation revealed the defendants were involved in an ongoing dispute between gangs in the Germantown and Gaithersburg areas, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office (MCSAO), and the victim was associated with a rival gang.

Malik Hney, 17, of Kensington, was sentenced Tuesday to serve 30 years in prison and five years of supervised probation after release, according to MCSAO. The judge recommended Hney be admitted to the Patuxent Youthful Offenders Program while incarcerated. He was found guilty last year for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the death of 20-year-old Taon Cline of Frederick.

Hney’s brother, Malachi Hney, who is now 18, received the same sentence Tuesday and was also recommended to be admitted to the Patuxent Youthful Offenders Program.

Cline was shot and killed April 22, 2022 on Gunners Branch Road in Germantown, according to police. Officers responded to the 19500 block of Gunners Branch Road for a reported shooting, police stated in 2022. They found Cline with multiple gunshot wounds and immediately began lifesaving efforts, but Cline was pronounced dead at the scene.

There are two more co-defendants. One is in juvenile court and another, Daylon Miller, is scheduled for trial in May, according to MCSAO.
