Buyer Beware: Door to Door Home Improvement Salespersons

On Wednesday, the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) issued a press release to remind residents about home improvement projects or yardwork scams. They ask consumers to be especially cautious when it comes to door-to-door services.

Every year as warmer weather returns, MCPD receives complaints about traveling criminal groups who offer services like lawn care, driveway paving or roof repair. Despite professional appearances many door-to-door workers are unlicensed, leave without completing the job or do substandard work.

In some cases, the work is paid for upfront, and the workers never return.

Here are some red flags to watch out for:

  • Unsolicited offers for services
  • High-pressure tactics to secure payment
  • Paying large sums of money before any work is completed

MCPD advises confirming businesses or contractors are licensed before agreeing to services. Check licensing status and complaint history through the Montgomery Office of Consumer Protection.

Residents should also be aware when door-to-door salespersons approach them outside their home to offer services. These incidents may be “distraction thefts” or “distraction burglaries”. While the homeowner talks with the salesperson an accomplice will enter the home undetected and steal valuables.

To avoid distraction thefts:

  • Keep doors locked, even while working in the yard
  • Do not allow strangers inside, even if they claim to be workers or officials, unless they have verified their identity and have an appointment
  • Report suspicious activity to police immediately

MCPD cautions these crimes can happen quickly and often target seniors and those home alone during the day.
