Committee Formed to Limit County Executive to 2 Terms

Members of the Montgomery County Committee for Better Government are circulating a petition to limit the number of terms a county executive may have.

County Executive Marc Elrich currently is in his second term and is permitted to run for a third term. But if the committee gathers 10,000 signatures from registered voters, the term limit question could be included on the 2024 ballot.

According to the committee’s website, “The Committee for Better Government” was formed to limit the number of consecutive four-year terms that the Montgomery County Executive may hold.”

While the position refers to the position of county executive in general, the message on the committee’s website criticizes Elrich specifically, noting, “Marc Elrich doesn’t get why we’re hemorrhaging good jobs, good businesses, and our tax base is shrinking.” It also states that the county is overtaxed and overregulated.

On Sunday at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, several people in the Montgomery County Republican Party tent gathered signatures.

County councilmembers are limited to three terms.
