Updated Oct. 20 at 12 p.m.

Councilmember Gabe Albornoz is expected to become the county’s next Director of the Department of Recreation, succeeding Robin Riley as he returns to a position he held from 2007 to 2018.

County Executive Marc Elrich announced Monday he has nominated Albornoz for the position. His nomination must be approved by the Montgomery County Council within 60 days.

The At-Large Councilmember said, “I am humbled and honored to be selected by County Executive Elrich to lead a department for which I have such great respect and admiration.”

He added, “I am committed to continuing the work of the Department of Recreation to provide critical programming and support to all County residents that promotes their mental health and well-being. I look forward to working with the talented and dedicated Recreation staff and continuing to serve our community.”

Councilmember Gabe Albornoz, who previously announced he will not seek re-election, announced he will officially leave his at-large seat Dec. 1.

“Public service has been the foundation of my career, and I remain deeply committed to our community,” he wrote in a news release.

“I am proud of the work we have accomplished during my time at the Council – advancing meaningful policies and initiatives, expanding opportunities, and strengthening the systems that support the health and well-being of all residents across Montgomery County. It has been one of the greatest privileges of my career to serve as an at-large Councilmember and the Chair of the Health and Human Services Committee for the past seven years.”

When he first announced his intention to leave the council, he posted on social media, After a great deal of consideration, I have decided not to seek a third term on the County Council. Serving the county that I love and have proudly called home my entire life has truly been an honor. It has been both humbling and deeply meaningful to represent this community as an elected official, and I am profoundly grateful for the trust, support, and work achieved over the past two terms.”

Councilmember Laurie-Anne Sayles is the only one of four At-Large members seeking reelection.

A news conference is set for Thursday afternoon in which the process to appoint someone to fill Albornoz’s remaining term will be announced.
