County Targets Sept 1 to Offer Rebates for Private Security Cameras

Montgomery County residents and businesses could become eligible for a rebate if they install a security camera on their property.

The Montgomery County Police briefed the County Council’s Public Safety and Economic Development Committees Monday about the program, which was introduced as a bill last year.

The joint committees voted unanimously to advance the bill to the full council.  According to Lt. Dan Helton the goal is to begin the program by Sept. 1.

The program would provide up to $250 for one camera, or $1,250 for five cameras, according to the proposed regulation.

“There are areas that can probably benefit from the usage of these cameras from a safety perspective,” Chief Marcus Jones said.

Jones noted security cameras have helped the police solve crimes. He cited an incident where camera footage helped police apprehend a man who attempted to abduct a child in Silver Spring.

“We don’t know how long it would’ve taken us to solve that particular attempted abduction,” Jones said, if they did not have security footage of the area.

“It doesn’t solve every crime, but the reality is that it gives us a better opportunity to solve many crimes,” Jones told the County Council.

Individuals, businesses or nonprofits in a “priority area” identified by the police could qualify for the program. Applications will be online when the incentive program begins, along with a way to identify priority areas.
