The Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) warns drivers about costly and ineffective transmission repairs.
Residents have reported paying thousands for fixes that left their vehicles needing additional work or completely undrivable. In one case, a repair shop replaced a single part in a 20-year-old car with 200,000 miles. The repair cost more than the vehicle’s value and led to more part failures.
OCP advises drivers to consider a full transmission rebuild instead of replacing individual parts. While a rebuild may cost more upfront, it can help prevent future breakdowns and reduce long-term expenses.
The agency offers the following tips for consumers:
- Ask if a full transmission rebuild is better than fixing one part at a time.
- Always request a written estimate and a clear explanation of the problem.
- Do not be pressured into fast decisions. Get a second opinion if unsure.
- Be wary of vague answers from repair technicians, such as “there are several potential issues.” Ask more questions to understand the problem and the solution.
Transmission problems often show early warning signs, including slipping gears, unusual noises, or warning lights. Ignoring these issues can lead to more expensive repairs later. Drivers should address problems early and choose shops that explain their process clearly.
OCP encourages consumers to research repair shops, check reviews, and verify certifications. Look for ASE-certified technicians, which indicates the shop meets industry standards for quality and professionalism.
