In Montgomery County, the sport of cricket is slowly growing but there could be a big boost in interest soon.
Frederick, Maryland is trying to finalize plans for a professional cricket stadium that will become the future home of the Washington Freedom, a Major League Cricket team.
The proposed Frederick Cricket Park is planned as a 10,000-capacity venue on approximately 24 acres. City officials and team representatives held a ceremonial groundbreaking last week. However, final site plan approval and required permits are still needed before full construction can begin.
The privately funded facility is expected to host professional cricket matches, youth sports, recreational activities and other community events. Supporters hope the stadium will attract visitors from across the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region.
The plan is for the park to open sometime in 2027.
Cricket is the second-most popular sport globally and is quickly gaining popularity in the United States. Cricket returns as a sport in the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
