According to police, when Melendez was leaving the store and going to his vehicle, he started to exchange words with a group of teenagers in front of the store. After he was in his vehicle, Melendez “produced a pump-action shotgun and pointed it at the teens while making threats.”

The teens dispersed and Melendez was last seen leaving in a black Ford Explorer, police said. After a search, 5th District Community Action Team officers saw a suspect matching his description driving a black Ford Explorer in a neighborhood.

Officers made contact and saw a Citadel shotgun and a large amount of ammunition in plain view. Melendez was placed in custody, police said.
