As of late June, the county has imposed a six-month moratorium on the construction of data centers. Like many areas across the country, officials here want to control data center impact on the community.
On Wednesday, this issue will be the focus of the County Council’s Economic Development committee meeting. Some councilmembers favor the current moratorium; others seek a longer timeline of up to two years.
Meanwhile, a Northern Virginia nonprofit promotes centers as a benefit to the residents there. For a more balanced view, MCM went to the Cyberlab at Montgomery College in Germantown and spoke to Dave Vargas, professor of cybersecurity, to find out more.
As they are being built, data centers do provide employment opportunities. But once completed they require a minimum of personnel to keep them up and running. To the north in Frederick County, a data center complex is already under construction, while in Prince George’s councilmembers have recently agreed to delay any action on data centers for up to two years.
