Elrich: 11 Indian, Vietnamese Businesses Interested in Opening Here

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich, Council President Glass and representatives from 20 area businesses recently returned from a two-week trip to India and Vietnam aimed at luring international companies to the area.

During the official visit, the delegation met with representatives from Indian and Vietnamese governments, businesses and universities.

“We were looking for opportunities,” Elrich said.

Eleven Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) were signed and two more are expected, Elrich said. Those MOUs mean that a company intends to open operations in Montgomery County. Most of those interested are involved in IT and biotech, and one is involved in manufacturing.

The county offered help for those companies’ soft landings, Elrich noted Wednesday during his weekly meeting with the media.

“We had two weeks of 12- and 14-hour days which was fairly brutal,” he said. “People over there were very gracious.”

Elrich said he let those interested in coming to the county know that one in six residents here are Asian and that 120 different languages are spoken here. He also told them there were many restaurants offering international dishes.
