Ex-US Capitol Police Officer Dunn Joins Congressional Race in 3rd District

Former U.S. Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn announced he will run on the Democratic ticket for U.S. Rep. John Sarbanes’s seat in the Third Congressional District. Sarbanes announced several months ago that he will not run for a 10th term.

Dunn, a Wheaton resident, was working in the U.S. Capitol Jan. 6, 2021 and testified before the bipartisan Jan. 6 Select Committee about the insurrection. He was a Capitol Police officer for more than 15 years.

Last year, he received the Presidential Citizens Medal for protecting the Capitol. He also was awarded a proclamation from Montgomery County Council and a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for his efforts Jan. 6, 2021.

According to Maryland law, Dunn can run in the 3rd district, which covers Howard County and parts of Anne Arundel county, although he doesn’t live there.

Dunn joined the U.S. Capitol police in 2008 and recently retired to run for political office. From 2017 to 2023, he was a police training officer responsible for guiding and training new officers once they graduated from the Academy. He is the son of a U. S. Air Force veteran.

He grew up in Prince George’s County and graduated from James Madison University in 2005 with a B.S. degree in Health Science with a concentration in public health education. He played football at JMU for four years as an offensive lineman helping lead the team to its first national championship.
