Family Seeks Justice in Murder That Happened on Victim’s Birthday

Family members are seeking answers after a man was shot and killed on his birthday in Silver Spring.

Last December, police said 29-year-old Nathaniel Potts was in the parking lot of the Summit Hills Apartment complex on 16th Street when he was shot and killed.

On Monday, Potts’ family members spoke out and urged anyone who may have information to come forward. They said he leaves behind his 10-year-old daughter.

Investigation revealed it was a “very deliberate, premeditated” homicide that involved more than one suspect, said Montgomery County Police Detective Michael Kwarciany. He said Potts came home from celebrating his birthday and was involved in a confrontation with a suspect after getting out of his car. As he tried to get into his Silver Spring apartment, he was shot and killed.

Potts’ older brother, William Potts, said it was the “nightmare that happened before Christmas.”

The victim’s older sister, Mardya Potts, described her brother as “a pretty remarkable person” and “an artist, but he was a family man first.”

They want community members to come forward with any information.

Police urge anyone with information to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070 or Crime Solvers of Montgomery County at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
